A Poem About the Cold Weather Shelter
02/29/2008
Carol Buell, KC's Poet Laureate, sent this note:
Monday night I slept over at the Cold Weather Shelter and was very moved by how cordial almost all of the guests were and saddened as well by all of it. I wrote this poem.
Homeless Shelter -- Old Barn Church
Columbia, Maryland
February 2008
The lofty-ceilinged barn
Is sheltering the poor,
Keeping them dry and warm
In stone walls heavy and secure.
A night or two, a week,
A place to lay the limbs,
A place to lay the head,
A moment's bed,
Keeping out the chills.
The fear of future dims,
The ache in hearts a moment stills.
All of us this moment seek,
When, scared and lonely, we are caught
In sheltering arms and brought
A brief respite from the storm,
And so we give each other
The courage to go on.
Love, Carol Buell
Carol,
I am very touched by your beautiful poem.
Thank you!
Reminds me that a Poet needs solitude, and also meaningful connections.
Blessings to you as you continue writing.
